Do I have a cold or the flu?

Flu season is upon us!  It is sometimes difficult to distinguish flu symptoms from cold symptoms.  Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses.  According to the CDC, it can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold.   Unlike a cold, the flu usually comes on suddenly.

Typical flu symptoms include:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea- this is more common in children

Many symptoms of the flu are similar to symptoms of the common cold.  If you are unsure if your symptoms are due to the flu or a cold, consult with your healthcare provider!  For more information, click on the link below.

The easiest and most effective way to stay healthy this school year is to WASH YOUR HANDS!
Picture
Why?
Washing your hands with soap and water removes dirt and germs from your hands and prevents you from getting sick!
What?
Soap and water is the best way to wash your hands, BUT if soap and water are not available alcohol-based hand sanitizer is a great alternative.

How?
Wet hands with clean, running water.  Lather with soap.  Scrub for 20 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" from beginning to end two times).  Rinse with clean water.  Dry using a clean towel or air dryer.

When?
  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating
  • After using the restroom
  • After touching garbage
  • After touching animals
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
